Rivers of Posts ft. John Merrick
Tuesday Aug 06, 2024
Tuesday Aug 06, 2024
Writer and editor at Verso John Merrick (@johnpmerrick) joins the show this week to talk about the rise of Britain's new right wing in the aftermath of the Conservative election defeat. John explains how this new right wing movement are younger, more welcoming of racism and violence, and, of course, much more online. He also notes how in these digital spaces, within all the Groyper memes, is the idolising of Enoch Powell, an whose fantasies of race wars across the country they are hoping to fulfil.

Friend of the show Sarah Hagi returns to the show to talk about growing up on the internet. Sarah recalls the creative methods she would employ to subvert her parents’ restrictions on her internet use, why she never had a MySpace phase, and of course, the curse- benefit analysis of still using Twitter. We also talk about the added performative expectations social media placed on millennials in the 2010s, and the struggles to move beyond that as we age out of internet culture. Plus, an update from friend of the show Jordan Peterson.

[UNLOCKED] Blue Ruin ft. Hari Kunzru
Tuesday Jul 30, 2024
Tuesday Jul 30, 2024
Hussein and Hari talk about the London art scene in the 90s and early aughts, and how the novel examines the relationship between art, authenticity and access to capital. Hari also talks about the challenges of writing a 'Pandemic Novel' at a time when most governments are choosing to believe it never happened, and whether art can have a long-lasting social impact at a time when so much cultural production demands more intensity and immediacy as a means to enhance the 'consumer experience'.

This is a preview of a bonus episode. Listen to the full episode at : www.patreon.com/10kpostspodcast
-------
Alex (@Alexgoldmund) returns to the show to talk about the state of podcasting in 2024, and why podcasters and producers are now facing similar tensions with tech platforms as musicians.
Alex, who was a podcaster and producer at Gimlet, talks about the 'golden age' of podcasting in the 2010s, when venture capital and mattress advertising was able to sustain unique, experimental shows with dedicated audiences, and how that declined as a result of algorithmic gaming, platform's vying for IP, and of course, pivoting to video. Alex also talks about his transition to independent production, and what the future of podcasting might look like as platforms like Spotify continue to defund their dedicated divisions.

The Unaccountability Pot Hole ft. Dan Davies
Tuesday Jul 16, 2024
Tuesday Jul 16, 2024
Economist Dan Davies makes his debut on the pod this week, to talk about his latest book, "The Unaccountability Machine: Why Big Systems Make Terrible Decisions - and How The World Lost its Mind". The book examines the social and political conditions of the last years of neoliberal politics, and how technology is used not to improve people's lives meaningfully, but to obscure power.
Dan explains his theories on 'accountability sinks' , and how it can be applied to both macroeconomics and internet culture. He then explains how an old theory of cybernetics and information distribution, first posed by the British theorist Stafford Beer, may hold a solution to the accountability crisis – and might be one of the only methods to combat the emerging far right.

Intellectual Dork Web : A Retrospective ft Eiynah
Friday Jul 12, 2024
Friday Jul 12, 2024
We're joined by Eiynah (@Nicemangos), host of the Polite Conversations podcast, to look back on the cursed mid-2010's, and in particular, the "Intellectual Dark Web".
Coined by Bari Weiss in 2016, the IDW – a mix of aggrieved academics and podcasters, united mainly by their refusal to acknowledge pronouns – had been presented as the group best placed to explain the ascent of Donald Trump, only to collapse under its own contradictions, personal beefs, and of course, some of its members going completely off the rails with conspiracy theories.
Eiynah explains the relationship between the 'IDW' and the New Atheism of the 2000s, how most of its remaining impulses are driven by Islamophobia, and why so many of its founding members have decided to become 'cultural Christians' now.

Aaron (@afrocosmist) returns to the pod this week to talk about Satoshi Kon's debut anime film, 'Perfect Blue'.
Released in 1997, Kon's film is an examination of a former J-Pop star trying to make it as an actor, and in the process finding herself in caught up in multiple identity crises spirals, as well as a string of murders. Considered one of the greatest anime films of the 90s, we talk about its exploration of early internet culture, its poignant observations of mass surveillance, and Kon's editing styles, splicing through the film's various timelines, give the viewer a profound sense of unease.
We also talk about the film's impact on Western cinema, in particular, David Aaronofsky, who used Perfect Blue as inspiration for Requiem for a Dream three years later.
