For the final episode of 2022, we're talking to Michael Veale, associate professor in digital regulations in the faculty of laws at UCL, about the Online Safety Bill.
We’ve wanted to talk about the online safety bill for a while now, not least because there’s some confusion as to what it actually is, and what it’s supposed to do.
On the one hand, its supporters say that it is a necessary intervention to ‘protect’ people from harmful online content - which can range from racism and misogyny, to pornography etc. Yet, the same supporters also insist that the OSB will enshrine freedom of speech. In fact, former tech minister Damian Collins even said this week, that the OSB is necessary to prevent people like Elon Musk from kicking off journalists critical of him.

Tuesday Dec 27, 2022
Tuesday Dec 27, 2022
This week, to round out a year that has felt increasingly like an all-out assault on the senses, we spoke to Senior Vox Correspondent Rebecca Jennings about her article, 'Every "Chronically Online" Conversation is the same".
This was a really fun way to end the year! It's always nice to talk to people who also understand how broken communication online is.

Rebecca (@wilksbecca) joins us again for part two of our special series on Landlord Posting.
On this episode, we talk about what 'makes' a Landlord poster, from the constant feeling of victimhood, to upholding the warped myths of history that make Landlords just as important as the Troops. We discuss how Landlord posting has borrowed from 'rise and grind' posting on TikTok and LinkedIn to try promote themselves as intrepid entrepreneurs, only to stumble at the first hurdles the moment they're asked if hoarding assets with cheap debt necessarily counts as "smart finance".

Posting through the Housing Crisis, Part 1 ft. Rebecca Wilks
Tuesday Dec 06, 2022
Tuesday Dec 06, 2022
In this episode, we're joined by Rebecca Wilks, a Cardiff-based poverty, policing and housing journalist, to talk about Landlord Posting - a genre of online content produced by (or for) Landlords.
Landlord Posting has become a more common feature of social media recently, not least in the wake of the cost-of-living crisis surging, and much of that being centred around the cost of renting and living - as well as a rising number of tragic deaths and hospitalisations directly linked to poor quality housing.
Landlord Posting is then an attempt by Landlords to rationalise, not just their disproportionate level of power, but the foundations its built on. And as they become harder to justify and rationalise, well, the posts become a lot stranger.
This episode serves as an introduction to the topic, and a low-down of the current state of Landlording in the UK, before cracking into the Posts proper in Part 2.

Mastodon about Nothing ft. Alex Hern

Friday Dec 02, 2022
This is a preview of a bonus episode. Listen to the entire episode at : www.patreon.com/10kpostspodcast
--------
This week, we're joined by Alex Hern, UK Tech editor at the Guardian, to talk about Mastodon, the new ‘alternative twitter’ people have been moving to in the wake of Elon Musk’s twitter take over, and the very real threat of the platform becoming dysfunctional.
We will be discussing the history of Mastodon, Alex’s experiences on the platform and where it differs from twitter in terms of objectives and positions. We’ll use his experience (documented in his guardian article) to discuss whether Mastodon is a suitable twitter alternative, or whether it’s simply attempting to revive what’s already dead - can Mastodon really survive a social media economy that’s pivoting to video anyway?

Tales from the Crypto ft. Jacob Silverman
Tuesday Nov 29, 2022
Tuesday Nov 29, 2022
This week, we focus on the collapse of FTX, a former crypto exchange worth multiple billion dollars, which declared just last year that it would be the company to ‘save’ crypto from extreme fluctuations, fraud, schemes etc. Sam Bankman-Fried, the 30 year old former CEO of FTX, was hailed as the next Warren Buffett, met with Bill Clinton and Tony Blair, and was extremely influential in government and policy circles in promoting cryptocurrency. He even stated that FTX could eventually buy Goldman Sachs.
We talk to Jacob Silverman, a journalist who has long warned about the fraudulence inherent in crypto, about how we got here, what SBF’s rise and fall tells us about the crypto/web3 economy, and whether the collapse of FTX is the final death knell for any use-case for crypto, other than to do scams.
