This week, we're joined by friend of the show Paris Marx, host of the podcast 'Tech Won't Save Us' and author of 'Road to Nowhere: What Silicon Valley Gets Wrong about the Future of Transportation'.
In this episode, Hussein and Paris talk about silicon valley's obsessions with generative AI, and the ways that it not only undermines art and creativity, actively limits what people are allowed to imagine, as as a result, are allowed to desire out of their lives. Paris explains how this isn't a new phenomenon, and that the prescient dangers of profit-driven generative AI were forewarned by the American writer Ursula le Guin nearly a decade ago.

This week, Hussein talks to Alison Rumfitt, author of "Tell Me I'm Worthless" and "BRAINWYRMS", about Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi. We talk about what happened in the film that seemingly got so many people mad, from stan accounts to online fascists, as well as how the response to the film spooked Disney into commissioning a load of very bad spin-off shows, rendering Star Wars into little more but pure content to passively watch on your laptop. Was the franchise destroyed by too many posts? That would be a fairly simplistic reading, sure. But it's not entirely untrue....

We also talk about how he started off as a forums guy, the ways in which forum culture informs the way he thinks about style and design, and whether the scope of the platform economy means that there are no more defining styles or aesthetics anymore.

Alex tells us his thoughts on how and why we post about tragedies when there is no real spaces to mourn or reflect, and as an internet culture, we are incentivised to just seek attention instead.

This week, we're joined by Washington Post tech columnist Taylor Lorenz, who has recently published her first book, "Extremely Online: The Untold Story of Fame, Influence, and Power on the Internet". Hussein talks to Taylor about how the idea of fame has changed in the past decade of accelerated online culture, whether an abundance of content means that nobody can really be influential anymore, and whether the attempts by creators and online influencers to unionise against tech platforms may lead to a wider acknowledgement of posting as a form of labour.
